Using shadows on a photoshoot – with Charlotte

Last few years I’ve been really experimenting with light and shadows. It’s just so fascinating and pure magic how it changes everything in photography! So this was one such experiment – using shadows on a photoshoot with model Charlotte @Tifanny’s models.

Me and Charlotte talked over instagram and just agreed to shoot the coming week. It was actually so easy to work with her, we got along like we knew each other already. Always helps so much when people on set are very on the same page. Styling was also worked out so smoothly, as Charlotte brought clothes I would have chosen myself.

Now going back to the lighting and shadows used in this shoot. We shot this in autumn when it was super cold outside, so we were very grateful that we had a place to shoot in. And the sunlight through the big windows really added to the mood. For some shots we used the sunlight very directly, no reflectors or anything to create a dramatic look. My favorite trick is making sure the face or part of the face it’s mostly in the direct light and the rest is shrouded in darkness. For even more creative results it’s fun to do half of the face in the light, or just an eye and so on.

For some I opted for a softer more moody lighting. When shooting inside usually it’s as easy as just going deeper into the room away from the window. (And this particular room had a very dark decor, so no light was bouncing around at all.)

Wearing lots of pieces from Realisation Par + a few other things with it.

Let me know which look or photo you like the most from this shoot below. My other tests and portrait shoots are on the blog as well.

Follow me on instagram where I share a lot of BTS and post a lot more often.
